Can Acer replace HP as world’s number one PC vendor?
Last month, Acer Inc has surpassed Dell to become the world’s second-largest computer vendor during the third quarter of 2009. Now, it seems that Acer is now looking at the world’s number one PC maker, Hewlett Packard. In the September quarter, HP has retained its position with about 20.2 percent of the market, whereas Acer reported 14 percent share of the market as compared to Dell’s 12.7 percent.
According to market sources, Acer has shipped in between 3.4-3.6 million notebooks (including netbooks) in September month, beating both HP and Dell. Mr. Wang also added that the company expects a growth of revenue by more than 70 percent over the next three years.
In the past few years, Acer has become one of the fastest growing PC makers, outshining Lenovo and then Dell to become number two PC maker.
The reason for the company’s high sales and market shares is the low-cost Netbook PCs. Acer expects about 50% gain in sales, but if world’s economy grows, the company anticipates growing even more in the near future. Further, the company anticipates that the handheld market will reach about 0 billion in 2010 and Acer expects a smaller pie out of this with billion revenue. In contrast, analysts expect Acer’s sales to reach billion in 2012.
However, if there was no shortage of certain components in its manufacturing units, the company would have done even better.
Recently, the company has introduced Aspire 1820PT, a 11.6” notebook with a swivel screen that transforms it into a tablet computer. Acer also announced that it will launch Android based netbooks, which will be available by Q3 of 2009.
Acer is not only working on PC market, but also entering into Smartphone business with the launch of its new Smartphone, the . The new device is powered by Qualcomm’s 768 MHz Snapdragon processor and Android platform.

When you satisfactorily complete a driver improvement clinic, you'll learn defensive driving techniques that can help you avoid and prevent crashes. These eight-hour classroom sessions cost no more than and are offered at sites around the state and as a computer-based course on the Internet. Contact the court to be sure it will accept a computer-based course. Also, if you are under age 20, you must enroll in a clinic that provides classroom instruction.
If DMV requires you to attend a clinic, you must complete the entire eight-hour course. If you fail to satisfactorily complete the clinic within 90 days, your driving privilege will be suspended until you meet this requirement. If you are attending college outside of Virginia or you are a member of the military or a military dependent and stationed outside of Virginia, you may be eligible for an extension of the 90-day requirement. The extension will be granted only if you are in an area where no approved clinics are offered. The extension will last until a break in your schedule.
You may be awarded five safe driving points, once every 24 months, after you successfully complete a driver improvement clinic. The highest safe driving point balance you may accumulate on your driving record is five points. If a court requires you to complete a clinic, the court determines if you will be awarded safe driving points.
Successful completion of a Virginia Driver Improvement Course may result in insurance premium reduction, forgiveness of a traffic ticket or removal of points from your driving record. In addition to arming you with information on street signs and street markings, driver improvement courses also provide tips on defensive driving. They also cover Virginia state laws, such as the seatbelt law and laws relating to teen drivers.

Everyone realizes a ticket is likely to increase your car insurance rates, but few drivers know by how much. Insurance.com’s new ?Uh-Oh! Calculator? tells you.
Insurance.com?s new interactive ?Uh-Oh! Calculator? allows you to compute the average percentage increase to your auto insurance rate for 14 common violations. Our analysis reveals that reckless driving is the most expensive violation among the infractions we surveyed, with an average rate increase of 22 percent. At the other end of the spectrum, driving without a seat belt triggers a relatively small 3 percent uptick.
Based on Insurance.com’s analysis of more than 490,000 auto insurance quotes given to drivers, here’s how much common tickets will impact your rates on average:
1.Reckless driving: 22 percent
2.DUI first offense: 19 percent
3.Driving without a license or permit: 18 percent
4.Careless driving: 16 percent
5.Speeding 30 mph over the limit: 15 percent
6.Failure to stop: 15 percent
7.Improper turn: 14 percent
8.Improper passing: 14 percent
9.Following too close/tailgating: 13 percent
10.Speeding 15 to 29 mph over limit: 12 percent
11.Speeding 1 to 14 mph over limit: 11 percent
12.Failure to yield: 9 percent
13.No car insurance: 6 percent
14.Seat belt infractions: 3 percent
“We all make mistakes, and doing so while driving will cost you. Of course, you’ll know immediately how much you owe for your ticket, but often you won’t know the impact of the ticket on your car insurance rate until you get your renewal from your insurer,” said Michelle Megna, managing editor of Insurance.com. “The ?Uh-Oh! Calculator? helps ease ticket trauma by showing how much more you’ll likely pay.”
For more tailored results, use the ?Uh-Oh! Calculator? to enter your own age, type of dwelling, state, marital status, and length of time you?ve been with your car insurance company. Methodology
Insurance.com analyzed more than 490,000 auto insurance quotes provided to Insurance.com users from 14 carriers between January 2009 and January 2011. We looked at quotes given to drivers with the 14 most common infractions recorded and compared them to quotes given to drivers with no violations. We used a model to estimate the annualized premium expected for certain combinations of personal attributes (residence, state, time with prior carrier, marital status and age) along with 14 violations. This ranking is not inclusive of all possible driving violations. Rates shown are averages; your own car insurance rates will depend on your personal factors.

Two of my babies were recognized this year at the national ASBPE awards in NYC. A bittersweet honor, since the company was sold in the meantime, and I didn’t make the final cut with the new company. So I got to hear about the winners from some loyal ex-coworkers. Publishing is a brutal gig sometimes.
But the DHS cover was a kick because, as it turns out, hatchling vultures look more like bald eagles than bald eagles. So, my patriotic metaphor for the newly reorganized Homeland Security Department is……a baby buzzard. Read into that what you will.
And somehow it worked. The cover won a national Gold (front cover, news tabloid 80,000+ circ).
The Vista cover was not one of my favorites, so I’m not sure why the hell it won. All the tech magazines were doing cover-stories on Vista, and they all looked the same. Desperate for a different angle, I decided the windows logo looked like a piece of stale sushi. The rest is history. That one won the national bronze for Front Cover, Computer Generated. A mega pun on the words "vista" (as in the OS as well as scenic views, in the other plates) and "served" (as in, food and file-servers) … bah! Too many puns on one cover. It should not have won.
But hell, it’s a couple of nuggets for the resume. I was happy with the vulture DHS cover, though.

Why You Should Recycle Your Old Computer
These days, Americans tend to be more environmentally conscious than ever. Sure, there are still some people who toss empty plastic water bottles out of their gas-guzzling SUVs as they drive to the big box store that is only 5 blocks away. But for the most part, people are making an effort to be more “green”, from bring their own canvas bags to the grocery store, to reducing their meet consumption, to making an effort to shop for local produce whenever possible. In addition to reducing consumption in general, and then reusing whenever possible, the third of the three “Rs” is recycle. Most people are pretty good about getting used tuna cans, day-old newspapers, empty glass bottles into the recycling bin. But what about more complicated items like fancy electronics? You can’t exactly toss your old computer into the green recycling bin that you put on your front curb every Tuesday and expect the village to take it away and recycle it for you.
