Are We Ready in Accepting The Advancement of Technology?
A manager in a big company, a chief, a farmer, a student, a teacher, and a doctor always use technology even in their leisure time. It shows that almost all people?s needs are successfully fulfilled by technology. Besides, the technology advancement has made people?s job much easier. For instance, traders can accumulate their income more easily and accurately with calculator, people can type a letter more tidily and efficiently using a computer, farmers are able to cultivate their farms more easily and fast using tractor, and many more.
Furthermore, the most extreme one is applied in medical world. With the assistance of advanced technology, board of scientists and doctors can ?transform? human being. Medical science provides what is called ?cloning? and ?sperm bank? to create a baby aimed for the unfertilized husband/wife who does not have a baby yet or to those who want to have a baby with a custom quality.
Meanwhile, in plant kingdom, people can now create a cross breeding between two different species plants, such as potato and tomato, apple and mango, and so on. The phenomenon is also good for animal kingdom because people can create an animal baby born whose DNA (chemical substance forming people?s body) consists of two different species, such as a cross breeding between rabbit and mouse. Lately, the technology development is also admitted successful in helping people with a particular disease/illness to stay longer.
Principally, all the easiness made by the technology advancement has changed people?s life dramatically. People used to do a heavy thing with their own energy, but now people can do their work/job more lightly and easily by the rapid development of the technology. As a consequence, people tend to make something quickly and produce many more things in shorter time. From these phenomena, we can infer that there are so many advantages gained from the advancement of technology. Nevertheless, the big question appearing is that ?Are we ready in accepting these??
The possible thing created by technology development stimulates other people to think that actually, or at least, people can manage the life of environment or create something as they want. Unfortunately, the things created are considered bad bycertain people. Oneof the examples is the ability of medical science in changing one?s sex from man into woman and vice versa. This is done through sexual hormone injection to those who want to change their sexuality. According to certain people, it is considered insane action because it tries to fight against the fate given by God.
Besides, the one?s will in marking up their performance is also able to be done. Recently, some people often do thissuch as changing the shape of their nose, bottom (ash), breast (for women), and male?s genital. Sometimes, this activity is successfully done, but in other times, it is not. Again, still according to some people, this kind of action is marked as a sin sinceit tries to negate the fate from God. People who do this are considered lack of thanks to God and they will be considered the victims of technology development.
Generally, people are so pleased in accepting the advancement of technology because of the advantages provided. Yet, as known that in fact the bad social and cultural impactsalso increase dramatically as the increasing of the technology. Take anexample, nowadays we find many people suffering from ?more serious and strange disease? such as cancer. Actually that kind of disease has appeared since some years ago but the victims at that time were not as many as today. It is estimated that the biggest cause of cancer is the ?unhealthy food/meal? besides genetic factor. It cannot be negated that the more rapid mobilization in this era claims everything to be done fast, including the food serving. As a result, people prefer eating fast food or food served instantly. Once again, the innovation of fast food is agreed as a result of the rapid technology development.
Another example comes from social point of view. Most of Indonesian people nowadays consider that there is a degradation of youth?s mental including in Indonesia. One of the indicators of this phenomenon is the higher rate of criminal done by youth. The hottest issue/problem is thatrecentlysome Indonesian youth like something called pornography and porn act. This is proven by the fact that there is an extremely increase of sexual abuseand murder number done by youth, especially by teenagers of school age.Based on the news, such immoral actions like doing free sex or killing other women after raping them are stimulated bythe ?criminal? stimulating?program seen. The recognition of these bad things was brought by electronic or mass media considered an impact of technology advancement.
The easiness in getting information through media has been used by certain people to introduce what is called pornography, porn act, drug abuse, free sex, and many more. Actually,recognitionand knowledgeof such terms areconsidered fine if people, especially the youth, understand the negative impacts resulted. Nevertheless, although they have known the bad impacts caused, but sometimes they still bring those actions into practices. As known, the number of teenagers doing free sex and abortion is getting higher every year. The lack of parents? attention/watch toward their children is considered one of the factors stimulating the youth?s immorality.
Therefore, if we look wisely, the making useof technology advancement with a big hope to help people?s life claims people to be smart both heart and mind. The big hope in technology must be accompanied by the realizing of the ?bad impacts? which are possibly produced by the technology. After realizing the bad impacts, then we must think the continuous action to prevent them. Automatically, it is needed maturity and knowledge as well. For example, we must think over and over again about the impact of fast food or the content of media we have seen. Besides, we have to prepare ourselves to be ready in facing particular effects brought by technology through doing some useful activities such as increasing our faith to God or learning the other country?s ways in preventing the bad effects of the technology. Hereafter, keeping the communication with family or other people and be open minded are also other ways to make us ready in accepting those kinds of technology advancement.
